During the years from 1870 - 1914, thousands of Icelanders emigrated to the New World, the majority of them moving to Canada.

This web site highlights the history of migration to North America, including personal accounts and literary excerpts. These writings illustrate various experiences and shed light on the conditions faced by Icelandic immigrants and their descendants in the United States and Canada.

The site was developed with funding from Iceland's Ministry of Education, Science, and Culture. These pages represent a portion of the Icelandic History Site of the National Broadcasting Service's Culture Department, prepared in collaboration with the ReykjavÝk Museum of Photography and the ┴rni Magn˙sson Institute.
